Please please please, if you are the kind of man who tries to seduce a women by inviting her to cultural events think it twice before suggesting a visit to the milanese spazio forma gallery to see ROBERT MAPPLETHORNE!!
Unless you are so self confident and ready to face any comparison, this is NOT the place to go. The exhibition is a great selection of Mapplethorpe’s works wit a HUGE focus on the male reproductive-system. I got there around 3pm yesterday afternoon and on the way to the gallery I noticed many depressed men..then i understood why!!! Gosh..gigantism really exists! I only heard about it but never seen it before..wow..thankfully I am a woman and I don’t have to hear my girlfriend explaining this is real because photoshop wasn’t existing!!
I’m getting obsessed now, can’t sleep anymore! I’m joking, but I was shocked and amused by other people faces: old ladies with their best glasses staring at the pictures, kids asking: ” dad, why are you sooo different?” , girlfriends giggling…
Beside this male anatomy workshop the exhibition is amazing, there are some incredible pictures about women and men’s body, the flowers are gorgeous and kids pictures are so expressive. Here a description about the show from the gallery website:
The exhibition, from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York, comprises 178 photographs and is a unique opportunity to view Mapplethorpe’s oeuvre in a single retrospective panorama: his early Polaroids dating from the seventies, the celebrated still lifes, the flowers, the portraits, the disconcerting Lisa Lyon series, the splendid images devoted to the male body (an unprecedented study as well as a celebration), the homage to his muse Patti Smith and his unusual, tender and melancholic portraits of children.
